The 2 types of cards not subject to Chase 5/24

Today’s reader question comes from reader Bart, who asks

So still being very new to the points/miles endeavors I am a little confused on some Chase card policies. The question I have is which Chase cards fall under the 5/24 rule and which do not? I just don’t want to screw it up this early. Thanks for the help

I have written before about the Chase 5/24 rule, which basically says that if you’ve gotten 5 or more cards (from ANY bank) in the past 24 months, you are extremely unlikely to be approved for most new Chase cards.  A targeted mailer will not get you past 5/24, and the only way I’ve seen to overturn Chase 5/24 is if one of your 5 cards is an authorized user card where you are not financially responsible for the payment.

There are 2 different ways to interpret Bart’s question, so I wanted to make sure I was answering the right question.

Type 1: Cards that don’t count as your 5 cards in 5/24

One way that the question might be asked is which cards can I get that will not count towards my 5 allowed cards.  The unfortunate truth on that one is… not many.  Chase 5/24 counts cards opened by ANY bank / issuer.  The only exception is that business cards from other banks (since they typically do not report on your personal credit report) will not count towards your total.  So examples of this would be The Blue Business Plus(R) Credit Card from American Express or the Capital One(R) Spark(R) Miles for Business card.

I have seen conflicting reports as to whether Chase business cards like the Ink Plus or Marriott business card count but from what I could tell most of them do NOT count towards your 5 card total

This may seem like common sense to most people but I have read many stories of people who (incorrectly) assume that they only had to stay under 5 CHASE cards to stay under 5/24.  Cards from ALL banks count towards your total of 5.

Type 2: Chase cards you can still get while over Chase 5/24

The second question is if you’re ALREADY over Chase 5/24, which Chase cards can you get?  The latest information I’ve seen says that the following Chase cards are NOT subject to Chase 5/24, and so if you’re over 5/24 you can still get the following cards:

  • Chase AARP
  • Chase Amazon
  • Chase British Airways
  • Chase Disney
  • Chase Hyatt
  • Chase IHG
  • Chase Marriott Premier business card
  • Chase Ritz-Carlton

If you’re over 5 cards in the past 24 months, you will almost certainly be declined if you apply for any other Chase card.

I hope this information helps!
