Plastiq is one of a number of services that let you use a credit card for expenses that you typically couldn’t use a credit card for. Think rent, mortgage, utilities, etc. Typically these services have a fee on the order of 3%, which makes them IMO not a great deal for anything but emergency spend to meet a minimum spending target.
Enter the Citi AT&T Access More card
The Citi AT&T Access&More card helps make things a little more palatable. There is currently not a valid public link, but Miles to Memories has found a working zombie link. The current offer is for a new phone credit (up to $650 value) after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months.
I applied for a Citi AT&T Access More card a few months ago and was approved. Annoyingly, I only got a $1000 credit line and they would not increase it, even when I offered to move credit line around, and won’t do anything with it until I’ve had the card for at least 6 months.
The 2 things that make the combination of Plastiq and AT&T Access More meaningful are:
- The Access More card gets 3X ThankYou points on “online purchases” which includes Plastiq
- Plastiq is currently offering a fee of only 2% for Mastercards, which the AT&T Access More card is
The card does have a $95 annual fee (not waived), and you do also get 10,000 bonus ThankYou points if you spend $10,000 on the card in the year.
My experiences with Plastiq, mortgages and the AT&T Access More card
I have a few rental properties that I own, and for the past few months, I have been paying those mortgages with Plastiq. Thankfully I live in the low cost of living Midwest, so even with my sad $1000 credit limit, my mortgage payment is only ~$700 (take that New York City! :-D)
So as an example, I made one mortgage payment with Plastiq for $700, and was assessed a $14 fee. So I earned 2,142 ThankYou points ($714 * 3). Since your ThankYou points can be used at a minimum at 1.6 cents per point on American Airlines flights, if you have a Citi Prestige (affiliate link), that $14 fee could be used to book $34 worth of travel on American Airlines.
You can of course, use ThankYou points to transfer to airline partners, such as Air France, which offers one-way flights from the US to Hawaii for only 15,000 points

But wait, you said “free”?
Yeah, it’s definitely a “free” with quotation marks. You CAN use ThankYou points worth 1 cpp to pay your statement. So in the example I posted above, you could use 1400 of your ThankYou points to pay off the $14 fee, leaving you with 742 ThankYou points for no additional cost.
It’s up to you which you value more – personally I have NOT done this. But you could if the money is worth more to you thank the ThankYou points.
