Via Miles to Memories, we learn about a targeted offer from American Express, where you are given 10,000 bonus for signing up for what Amex calls the Extended Pay or Pay as you Go offer.  It’s a way that you can choose to pay off your balance over time on select American Express credit and charge cards.amex-american-express-reconsideration-line-phone-number-logo

Typically a charge card requires you to pay off the balance each month, but with the American Express Extended Pay or Pay as you Go offer, you’re able to pay that off over time

Should you take advantage of Amex Extended Pay

One of the basic tenets of travel hacking is that you should not start if you have any outstanding credit card debt, and you should make sure to pay off your monthly balances each month.  Nothing will kill any perceived value from your credit card rewards like being charged interest.

So while you should definitely SEE if you are eligible for Extended Pay (and sign up if you’re targeted for the 10,000 Membership Rewards), I would NOT actually DO the Extended Pay – you still want to pay your bills in full every month.

If you weren’t targeted, I would not sign up proactively, and if you’re already signed up, I would UN-sign up, in hopes of being targeted in the future.

How to check if you’re targeted for the American Express Extended Pay offer

There are 2 ways to check if you’ve been targeted for this American Express Extended Pay option.  The first is that it appears under your Amex Offers section (choose “View all offers”)

The easier way is to just follow this link (h/t Mile Nerd).  After you log in, you’ll be told if any of your American Express cards were targeted

Unfortunately, none of my wife’s or my cards were targeted 🙁

Readers what about you – were any of your Amex cards targeted for this 10,000 point bonus?
